Embracing Semantic Technology for Better Metadata Authoring in Biomedicine
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Center for Expanded Data Annotation and Retrieval (CEDAR) has developed a suite of tools and services that allow scientists to create and publish metadata describing scientific experiments. Using these tools and services—referred to collectively as the CEDAR Workbench—scientists can collaboratively author metadata and submit them to public repositories. A key focus of our software is semantically enriching metadata with ontology terms. The system combines emerging technologies, such as JSON-LD and graph databases, with modern software development technologies, such as microservices and container platforms. The result is a suite of user-friendly, Web-based tools and REST APIs that provide a versatile end-to-end solution to the problems of metadata authoring and management. This paper presents the architecture of the CEDAR Workbench and focuses on the technology choices made to construct an easily usable, open system that allows users to create and publish semantically enriched metadata in standard Web formats.

Authoring adaptive educational hypermedia on the semantic desktop
Personalisation of information is a desired feature, but authoring and creation of adaptive hypermedia is a difficult endeavour. Especially, manual annotation is the bottleneck of such authoring. Thus it is vital to support the authoring process by reusing automatically generated metadata. Here, we show the integration of the generic AH authoring environment MOT into a semantic desktop environm...
متن کاملEstablishing Semantic Interoperability of Biomedical Metadata Registries using Extended Semantic Relationships
Achieving semantic interoperability is critical for biomedical data sharing between individuals, organizations and systems. The ISO/IEC 11179 MetaData Registry (MDR) standard has been recognized as one of the solutions for this purpose. The standard model, however, is limited. Representing concepts consist of two or more values, for instance, are not allowed including blood pressure with systol...
متن کاملAuthoring Semantic and Linguistic Knowledge for the Dynamic Generation of Personalized Descriptions
We present the ELEON/NATURALOWL system, an application of Semantic Web and Natural Language Generation technologies that combines a conceptual representation of cultural heritage objects with linguistic and adaptation resources. This combined model is used to automatically generate multi-lingual and personalized textual descriptions of cultural heritage objects represented as instances of an OW...
متن کاملIntelligently Authoring Metadata for a Semantic Web Peer-to-Peer Environment
Learning Objects Metadata (LOM) aims at describing educational resources in order to allow better reusability and retrieval. Unfortunately, annotating complete courses thoroughly with LOM metadata can be a tedious task. In this paper we show how additional inference rules can make this task easier, and allows us to derive additional metadata from existing ones. Additionally, using these rules a...
متن کاملTaking Advantage of LOM Semantics for Supporting Lesson Authoring
Learning Object Metadata (LOM) is an interoperable standard focused on enabling the reuse of learning material for authoring lessons. Nevertheless, few work was done on taking advantage of LOMsemantics to facilitate retrieval of learning material. This article suggests an original approach which uses the structure of a lesson in order to automatically generate LOM-semantic-based queries whereas...
